چکیده / توضیح Friction stir welding (FSW) of non-linear joints receives an increasing interest from several industrial sectors like automotive, urban transport and aerospace. A force-controlled robot is particularly suitable for welding complex geometries in lightweight alloys. However, complex geometries including three-dimensional joints, non-constant thicknesses and heat sinks such as clamps cause varying heat dissipation in the welded product. This will lead to changes in the process temperature and hence an unstable FSW process with varying mechanical properties. Furthermore, overheating can lead to a meltdown, causing the tool to sink down into the workpiece. This paper describes a temperature controller that modifies the spindle speed to maintain a constant welding temperature. A newly developed temperature measurement method is used which is able to measure the average tool temperature without the need for thermocouples inside the tool. The method is used to control both the plunging and welding operation. The developments presented here are applied to a robotic FSW system and can be directly implemented in a production setting.

Recent developments in information systems and computer technology allows for the implementation of new philosophies that integrate various monitoring applications into one complex system connected through company-wide IT systems and with systems operating throughout the whole supply chain. This paper reviews developments in the area of advanced monitoring and integration. Research on new approaches, standards, developed solutions, and company applications are presented. New directions of research and development in all areas of advanced monitoring and implementation of recent IT solutions are discussed.

چکیده / توضیح The standard diagnostic technique for assessing osteoporosis is dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measuring bone mass parameters. In this study, a combination of DXA and trabecular structure parameters (acquired by computed tomography [CT]) most accurately predicted the biomechanical strength of the proximal femur and allowed for a better prediction than DXA alone.

چکیده / توضیح Active power converters are flexible and highly dynamic. Many power converters, as battery charging devices, use only a small part of their technical capabilities. This paper develops a new control method that combines the primary converter function with grid frequency control. Doing this, the frequency stability can be influenced positively, using the power converters control potential, without penetrating its primary functions under normal power system conditions. In case of severe frequency deviations, priority is given to this grid support functionality, which can significantly improve the security of supply. If the converter’s control algorithm does not take frequency stability aspects into consideration, the impact of thousands of these devices on the grid frequency stability will be negative. Electric and hybrid cars with battery storage and plug-in capabilities are used as an example for power conversion units. The impact of many cars, with the referred control method, on the UCTE (Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity) grid frequency can be observed by simulations. Even a small percentage of electric cars can significantly influence the grid frequency after a power plant disconnection fault. No communication between network operator and converter is necessary for the basic grid supporting functions. Dispersed frequency support as suggested by the developed control method could be adopted as a requirement to future grid codes.

چکیده / توضیح The detection of genetically modified (GM) materials in food and feed products is a complex multi-step analytical process invoking screening, identification, and often quantification of the genetically modified organisms (GMO) present in a sample. “Combinatory qPCR SYBR®Green screening” (CoSYPS) is a matrix-based approach for determining the presence of GM plant materials in products. The CoSYPS decision-support system (DSS) interprets the analytical results of SYBR®GREEN qPCR analysis based on four values: the C t- and T m values and the LOD and LOQ for each method. A theoretical explanation of the different concepts applied in CoSYPS analysis is given (GMO Universe, “Prime number tracing”, matrix/combinatory approach) and documented using the RoundUp Ready soy GTS40-3-2 as an example. By applying a limited set of SYBR®GREEN qPCR methods and through application of a newly developed “prime number”-based algorithm, the nature of subsets of corresponding GMO in a sample can be determined. Together, these analyses provide guidance for semi-quantitative estimation of GMO presence in a food and feed product.

چکیده / توضیح Owing to the labelling requirements of food and feed products containing materials derived from genetically modified organisms, quantitative detection methods have to be developed for this purpose, including the necessary certified reference materials and calibrator standards. To date, for most genetically modified organisms authorized in the European Union, certified reference materials derived from seed powders are being developed. Here, an assessment has been made on the feasibility of using plasmid DNA as an alternative calibrator for the quantitative detection of genetically modified organisms. For this, a dual-target plasmid, designated as pJANUS™-02-001, comprising part of a junction region of genetically modified soybean event GTS-40-3-2 and the endogenous soybean-specific lectin gene was constructed. The dynamic range, efficiency and limit of detection for the soybean event GTS-40-3-2 real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) system described by Terry et al. (J AOAC Int 85(4):938–944, 2002) were shown to be similar for in house produced homozygous genomic DNA from leaf tissue of soybean event GTS-40-3-2 and for plasmid pJANUS™-02-001 DNA backgrounds. The performance of this real-time Q-PCR system using both types of DNA templates as calibrator standards in quantitative DNA analysis was further assessed in an interlaboratory trial. Statistical analysis and fuzzy-logic-based interpretation were performed on critical method parameters (as defined by the European Network of GMO Laboratories and the Community Reference Laboratory for GM Food and Feed guidelines) and demonstrated that the plasmid pJANUS™-02-001 DNA represents a valuable alternative to genomic DNA as a calibrator for the quantification of soybean event GTS-40-3-2 in food and feed products.

چکیده / توضیح In this work, a chromatographic method for identification of volatile organic compounds was compared with canine recognition. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC–TOF MS) were used for determination of concentrations of trace gases present in human breath. The technique enables rapid determination of compounds in human breath, at the parts per billion level. Linear correlations were from 0.83–234.05 ppb, the limit of detection was the range 0.31–0.75 ppb, and precision, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), was less than 10.00 %. Moreover, trained dogs are able to discriminate breath samples of patients with diagnosed cancer. We found a positive correlation between dog indications and the ethyl acetate and 2-pentanone content of breath (r = 0.85 and r = 0.97, respectively). The methods presented for detection of lung cancer markers in exhaled air could be used as a potential non-invasive tool for screening. In addition, the canine method is relatively simple and inexpensive in comparison with chromatography.

چکیده / توضیح The discusser appreciates the exhaustive study undertaken by the authors for predicting ground vibrations resulting from the blasting operations in an open-pit mine by adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. However, the present paper has some scientific mistakes especially in the basic conception and application of the fuzzy theory. The straightforward application of ANFIS through software gives rise to physical and logical problems even though the results may seem convenient from the numerical tests point of view. In any scientific research the first steps should include the logical and physical principles of the data at hand in addition to its simple treatment through some graphs such as the scatter diagrams prior to classical regression or ANFIS methodology application. Otherwise, complete dependence on any methodology especially by software without knowing its internal domain may lead to erroneous scientific applications.
